June Newsletter

Dear PCU Members,

We wanted to take a moment to thank our players and families for your support and patience as we have, and will continue to navigate what club soccer looks like in this new chapter. As we prepare for our return to in-person sessions, we are diligently working to modify our curriculum and operating procedures to ensure the safety of our players, families, coaches and staff. Additionally, it’s our commitment to continue to provide safe, high quality youth soccer experiences, for every player.

We’re excited to return to play in a responsible way, and we’d like to share the ways we’re doing that.

In order to return to the field and begin training, the following must occur:

  1. The Governor must allow Multnomah County to enter into Phase 1, anticipated to begin on June 19.

  2. Portland Parks and Recreation must open the fields for permitted play. The fields will be opened to non-permitted use once we enter Phase 1, but permitted play is currently not scheduled to happen until July 6. We are working on options with the City, but again we need to be in Phase 1 before any decisions at Parks can be made.

Please see our Return to Play Procedures including the responsibilities of each player, parent and coach.

2020/21 Plan for Tryouts:

Oregon Youth Soccer Association (OYSA) has set July 6 as the date tryouts can begin statewide. Many other counties in the state are in Phase 2, and clubs in those areas are already back on the field and training. With the Governor pushing out the date for opening Multnomah County, we know that on July 6, Portland we will still be in Phase 1.

Due to these circumstances, we will be holding “tryouts” one of the following two ways:

  1. On-Field Tryouts: Have on-field tryouts following the procedures set forth in Phase 1. We will be adhering to our Return to Play Policies to ensure our player’s, families and staff’s safety. Pre-registration by June 21 is REQUIRED, as we will be forming cohorts of 7-9 players to ensure proper social distancing.

OR

  1. Offering Spots in Age Divisions: If the fields are not open during the week of tryouts, we will begin offering spots on July 6. Player’s will be invited to accept their spot in their age division, with our staff forming official teams once our coaches have been able to observe players once we have returned to the field.

Our Online Training Tool: Techne App

We’ve invested the player’s tryout fees from this season into the Techne app, an innovative online tool to help our players learn, improve, and refine their skills through consistent technical training. Each player's club membership includes new technical training sessions every week, shooting sessions, Techne GK sessions, Time Trial Drills, and the chance to compete for a spot on the Techne Leaderboards.

Individual training is an important part of player development, and data from the app can be viewed by our coaching staff.

We will also be sharing the club’s Techne Leaderboards on our social media weekly.

Invites with login information were sent via email at the beginning of June.

Fee Structure for 2020-21:

Due to training and game cancellations in May, June and part of July we have reduced our player’s annual fee to $1395. This does not include the COVID-19 Credit of $100 that qualifying families will receive from the 2019-20 season.

We will be offering three payments plans to our members:

  1. Pay $1395 in full when you accept your player’s spot in a program.

  2. Pay $295 when spot is accepted and pay the remaining balance over 4 months ($295 per month + finance fee).

  3. Pay $295 when spot is accepted and pay the balance over 8 months. ($136.50 per month + finance fee).

Financial aid applications are available for qualifying families and must be submitted via email within 5 days of accepting your player's spot. We still ask for a $295 deposit at the time of acceptance. We recognize the financial impact COVID-19 has had on many of our families. If the listed payment plans do not work in your current situation, please reach out to Christina Martin at cmartin@pcusc.org and she will tailor a plan that will work for your family.

Buckman Field Renovation:

Pardon our mess! To better serve you, Buckman Field will be closed as we install new FIFA Approved turf. The project is currently scheduled to be completed on July 20, with our players returning to enjoy the new fields that week. All training sessions prior to July 20 will be held at Delta Park.

In Conclusion:

We will closely monitor all communication from the CDC and WHO, as well as local authorities, for safety updates. As we learn more, and if needed, we’ll adjust our operations accordingly.

We appreciate your trust in us, as well as your patience and flexibility as we work through this situation as a strong, unified community.
